Brainspotting Therapy
Where your brain meets healing
“The attempt to escape from pain is what creates more pain.” ~Gabor Mate'
Do you find yourself questioning why you cant seem to “get over” things easily? Or maybe you are noticing that the traditional talk therapy route is no longer working.
Whatever it might be, you are ready for a change, a lasting change.
Brainspotting is a powerful , focused therapy that helps you access and process deep emotional or traumatic experiences so that you can move on and begin enjoying life again.
What is brainspotting?
Brainspotting is a form of therapy that makes use of the body’s natural abilities to heal. The idea is that where you look affects how you feel.
By focusing on specific points (brainspots) in your visual field, we can tap into parts of your brain that hold unresolved feelings and memories. This allows your brain to process and release these emotions in a safe and controlled way.
Harness the power of the brain to heal
Brain Talk:
When you are engaging in talk therapy you are using the neocortex (the thinking part of your brain) BUT this is not where trauma and emotions are stored.
In order to do the deeper work of healing, we need to activate the subcortical (the feeling part of your brain) where we can get at the root of your emotional pain.
This allows for a more direct connection to the unresolved emotional experiences so that profound healing and change can happen on a deep neurological level.
But what is a Brainspot?
A brainspot is not a specific spot in your brain. It is the brain’s response to focused activation along with a designated eye position. This means that when we connect the emotional response with a particular eye position, we are activating a network in the brain. Here we will also see a somatic (or body) response.
“What’s in the body is in the brain and what’s in the brain is in the body.”
~David Grand
I am a firm believer that the brain and body can not be separated in therapy. We need to access both of them to see the changes that we truly desire.
Being able to work on emotional wounds can help decrease physical symptoms that we may have such as:
Pain- joint pain
Headaches
Stomach/digestive issues
Similarly, working on physical symptoms will help relieve emotional concerns such as:
Anxiety
Shame
Stress
Brainspotting facilitates deeper healing which allows you to be more aligned with the way you want to live your life.
What does a Brainspotting session look like:
Like most first sessions, we are going to take a look at what is bringing you in for therapy. Once we have designed your personal treatment plan we will:
-
a target- this is where we will bring up an experience that you want to work on and begin to feel it in your body.
-
a brainspot- we will find a spot in your visual field that connects with this emotional experience.
-
Mindfulness- here you will notice any sensations, emotions or thoughts that arise while focusing on that spot and let your brain and body do it's work.
-
at the end of your session, we will spend some time reflecting on your experience and integrating any new information you learned in the process.
We will continue this process until you feel that you have worked through that specific part of your story.

Frequently asked questions about
Brainspotting Therapy:

I have used this modality in both settings. My training was all virtual and as I experienced it that way, I can confidently say that it is helpful virtually. Many of my in person clients have found it extremely beneficial as well.
-
No. David Grand was trained as an EMDR therapist by Francine Shapiro (founder of EMDR). However, in his practice he noticed something different (brainspots) and this is where he began to research and develop this method. Both of these modalities work to heal at a very deep level. There are some differences in the set up and structure. We can talk more about both of these options.
